I was rushed to the hospital yesterday by my loving husband when he heard the urgency in the nurse’s voice. “Bring her in now” and the words “life threatening” added to his fury. My fever had spiked to 101.7 and I was unable to keep anything down. Fortunately he took a bag with us for the car ride to the hospital.
As I sat in the doctor’s office trying to hear what Dr. Coscio was saying, I saw everything turn black, and then, I’m told, “you slumped in the chair.” I apparently passed out. Severely dehydrated and very sick, she decided to admit me to the hospital.
At this writing we are waiting for the nurse to bring my Heparin, remove my IV, and complete the discharge paperwork. The doctor said all I had to do was circle the hall without passing out–so I did–three times past the room guarded by three imposing officers. I’ve only seen that in the movies, so it was surreal. We’ve been waiting about three hours now, and I’m beginning to wonder if I should have ordered dinner.
I would like to say I got plenty of rest while I was in the hospital, but anyone who has been in the hospital knows that is not the case at all. All the out-patient CT scans are performed during the day, so that leaves the night shift for those who are in-patient. They took me down around 1:00 AM, and drew more blood a few hours later. I did find sleep in between awakenings, but I will be glad to go home and get a full night’s rest in my own bed tonight.
We’re still waiting for all the cultures to come back (apparently they have to wait for those to grow, so there’s no way to rush it) to determine if it is a virus or bacterial infection. But we were happy to discover it is not my gall bladder or other potentially serious conditions.
There is an upside to all of this…they have BlueBell ice cream.
