I didn’t know I had a hidden talent. I’ve watched shows where people pick locks, and of course it always opens in an instant. Never did I imagine I would actually need that skill, or even be able to do it if I tried. Well, before you read any further you have to promise my Mom you won’t tell her. Promise? O.K. Read on. 🙂
I went to her house to pick up some items she had asked me to get (e.g. nighties, diabetic test strips, etc.). It was about a 35 minute drive from the Hospice House. Upon arrival I was devastated to discover I had left her house key in my computer bag … which I left in her room at Hospice. Rats! Her doors were locked and there was no way in.
I checked with the neighbor to see if she happened to have a key. We had a nice 20 minute conversation, but no key. Walking around the house while looking for an open window only led to scares by spiders as I walked through their webs. No luck. I tried picking the lock. Again nothing. I really isn’t as easy as it looks. I was determined not to break a window.
Lord, help me get inside. A screwdriver whispered, “take off the handle.” Less than 20 minutes later I was inside. I put the handle back on in much less time, and all is good. On to get her medicine and her Boost, then back again. Since the trip took longer than I had hoped, Mom was a little nervous, calling me every 20 minutes. She got lonely and missed me. I see now how important it is for me to stay with her as much as I can, and let her know everywhere I go. I will try to leave when people are here to keep her company, rather than leave her alone.
We had some good friends come and visit this afternoon. Her Pastor and his wife, and some friends from Orlando. We also got a visit from the doctor, the Chaplain, and the Social Worker. Before our friends left we sang a verse of How Great Thou Art. It was beautiful hearing all the great voices singing together. The Pastor with his booming baritone, his wife and our friends with their beautiful sopranos, and me. I’m pretty sure the whole building could hear us praising God. Tears came to her eyes and she was so grateful. She had a big day!
