Our original motivation for going to the St. Louis Arch was not very high minded (pun intended). To be honest, Elizabeth wanted to go so she could see where Percy jumped into the Mississippi River in The Lightning Thief. Since we (parents) had been here before, and it was on our route anyway, we thought, “sure, why not?”
The Arch proved to be a valuable experience for Elizabeth, but perhaps even moreso was the museum at the base. The “Buffalo Commissary” was the most noteworthy. Our ranger explained that the Indians used the buffalo much like we use a commissary, as their hardware store, grocery store, toy store, and clothing store. Everything they needed to survive was provided by the buffalo. We were most fascinated by the bladder, which is used as a drinking bottle, and later turned into a ball for playing when it no longer held liquid. Yes, she had samples for us to hold.
