USS Lexington

After the morning service we were heading out to a meeting, which ended up canceled, so we had some time to kill.  It was the perfect opportunity to board the USS Lexington, an aircraft carrier used in World War II and recently filmed in the movie “Pearl Harbor.”  The ship’s deck is larger than 3 football fields – very impressive!

We donned our bodies with our newly acquired t-shirts in honor of the worship team (see previous blog). Cindy enjoyed taking family photos while Tim and Elizabeth played along.

Blue Angel cockpit

This was an educational experience for all on board.  Elizabeth steered in the Blue Angel cockpit and Tim tried out the big gun.  Cindy was in awe at the size of the ship.  She captured facts through the lens of her camera.  We all got our exercise walking up and down flights of stairs.

Pictures of Japanese Kamikaze pilots donned one memorial room. Kamikaze literally means “divine wind.”

One lasting impression involved the reminder of sacrifices our military make when they serve on our behalf.  Quarters were small.  Death was imminently possible.  While everything from the barber to the dentist was easily accessible, the floating city where they lived for months at a time was less than luxurious.  Thank you to all our servicemen!
