Shave and a Haircut…

Well, maybe just a shave (ha ha). I’m keeping my sense of humor as I see no reason not to.  Brittany is my stylist who works at Gayla’s, and it was obvious she has done this many times before.  They are all about maintaining dignity, and providing as much comfort during the process.  She wanted it to be a positive experience, and it was.  I’m sure many women are in tears as their beautiful hair falls to the floor (if it is still beautiful – mine was pretty pathetic by this time), but honestly I saw this as an opportunity to see something I’ve never seen before – my head!  She used the clippers, so in essence I do still have hair albeit very, very short.  It wasn’t a true shave in the razor sense of the word, but it is gone…all of it.

My back was to the mirror while the clippers buzzed away.  When finished she asked, “do you want me to put on your wig, or would you like to turn around and look at yourself in the mirror first?”  Well, Duh!  Of course I wanted to see!  “Turn me around!”  I said it nicely.

I admit it was a little shocking at first.  I knew I would see a bald head, but I didn’t quite know what it would look like.  I mean, I’ve lived nearly 50 years and I’ve never seen my own head.  That’s a little mind-boggling when you think about it.  She said I have the perfect shaped head, a “pretty head.”  She probably says that to everyone, but I was…impressed.  Well, after the initial shock wore off anyway, but it wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it might be.

One thing I hadn’t really considered (even though she told me the last time I was in) is that hair keeps your head warm.  My head immediately felt the cool of the air, which I’m sure dropped about 5-10 degrees in temperature.  So I took her up on the offer to try on some beanies and purchased a royal blue one for sleeping.  At this writing Tim hasn’t seen my head yet as we are waiting for Elizabeth to get out of youth group, but he will be the first.  In the meantime, I’m enjoying my new hairdo and the frizz-free experience I will have — even in the rain!
