Into the Top Five

The Black Hills have made their way to our top five favorite places to visit. Here are a few reasons why: a) The highest mountain on the east side of the Rockies is in the Black Hills, or so says the visitor information, b) The roads are well-paved and make for smooth riding, c) The roads snake their way through the mountains in both interesting and challenging ways, d) The scenery is a combination of very masculine rock formations and yet laced with beautiful flowers, lush greenery, and ample wildlife, and e) Just as many people seem to ride on two or three wheels as those who ride in four-wheel cages. Simply put: for the motorcycle enthusiast, this is a must-do ride.

Morning ride to Mount Rushmore, Jewel Cave National Park, Wind Cave National Park, and Custer State Park. Wildlife spotted: buffalo, deer, wild turkey, prairie dogs, rabbit, chipmunks, hawks and various other birds.

I liked this perspective.

Buffalo!

A late lunch in the city of Custer, then a little rain in the afternoon to cool us off.

Deadwood, SD. It’s a tourist trap and casino town, but kinda cool as well.

Afternoon ride to Deadwood (gravesites of Wild Bill Hickock and Calamity Jane), on to Sturgis, and back to our “home sweet hotel.”

We hope you enjoy the pictures. These have not been through “post-production,” so what you see is what you get.

Per request, we will include a picture of the map of our trip at the end. Our yellow highlighter is not quite dark enough to do that now.

Daily Stats: 270 miles ridden today. 3077 miles logged to date. Five point addition to our ABCs gives us a total of 66 points in 2012.

Tomorrow: We travel to Sioux Falls, SD, while South Dakota is experiencing a very hot summer.

Let us know what you think of our blog!

Cheers!

Tim and Cindy West
